A torc was a type of cerebroenergetic enhancing neck ornament consisting of a band of twisted metal, but specifically also an electronic, metapsychic amplification device created by the Tanu that also has the ability to raise a latent Metapsychic powers to operant status while the device is worn. Sebi-Gomnol expanded the array of devices from the original gold torc to include lesser versions that include various restrictions or lack amplification functions.

Types of torcs

• Black torc - Not really a device, but a classification of those who are not compatible with torc technology and have various negative side effects.
• Simple torc - Generally only used by Ramas, this device includes only control, simplified mental communication circuitry, pleasure-pain circuitry.
• Gray torc - No metapsychic amplification, but includes control, full mental communication circuitry, and pleasure-pain circuitry.
• Silver torc - Metapsychic amplification circuitry and includes control, full mental communication circuitry, and pleasure-pain circuitry.
• Gold torc - Metapsychic amplification and full mental communication circuitry only.
